Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Many times the journey of counseling is initiated by a life crisis, when one’s resources have been exhausted and it is time to gather more tools for life’s tool box. It is an act of strength to reach out, not a weakness. My diverse counseling career has prepared me to work effectively with people from various walks of life. I am not a fixer, I see myself as a facilitator of change. One of my main goals as a therapist is to teach people skills needed to increase feelings of independence and empowerment.

Loss, grief, and life transitions are my main specialty areas. Loss is an ever present aspect of life yet so few are prepared to deal with it. Loss comes in many forms throughout life. The more we know about the process of grief the better able we are to effectively address our ongoing life losses.

Featured Therapist

Kelly Duggan Shearer, M.A.
Patricia Ravitz, M.A.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
San Rafael, CA

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
