Personal Statement:
Dre McGee is a Marriage and Family Therapist providing psychotherapy to children, individuals, couples, and families. She has worked in Santa Barbara serving the community since 2005. She can work with a multitude of problems that may be overwhelming an individual, child, couple or a family. Dre has had experience working with a wide variety of diagnosis and life issues that face an individual, couple, and/or family i.e. depression, anxiety, transitions, burnout, and more. She specializes in pre-marital counseling and helping the couple plan and prepare for a life long marital commitment. While addressing the stresses of the upcoming nuptials, she helps the couple learn skills to communicate better, fighting fairly, compromise, and help pin point issues they may disagree or strengths that can help them build a road map to a successful life long marriage. She also has a specialty working with youth who are in the foster care system or who have been adopted and facing the struggles of transition, adjustment with a new family, rules, cultures, and difficult feelings. Also providing family planning for those who are considering foster care or adoption. Dre’s goal is to help you navigate through life’s transitions and struggles to help each person discover a happier lifestyle and create better quality of life. She believes that therapy is a positive investment in one’s self that creates personal growth and enhances one’s life. Dre is a practical and interactive therapist; her treatment approach is to provide support with insight and feedback to help address current and long-standing issues facing the individual, couple, and/or family. Dre McGee graduated from University of Santa Barbara in 2007 with her Bachelor of Art’s in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. She continued on to Graduate school and received her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology in early 2009. Dre has developed her experience from such non-profit agencies as Hospice of Santa Barbara, Family Service Agency, Community Action Committee, and Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. Dre also serves as on the board for the Santa Barbara chapter of California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists as their Social Media/Marketing Chair and is very involved with her community of mental health providers.

Therapeutic Services: • Child Therapy • Individual Therapy • Marriage & Family Therapy • Pre-Marital Therapy Child Services: Watching our children struggle whether in school, with peers, or in their relationship with us is a very difficult part of life. Parents often seek the counsel of a professional when they see their child struggling or demonstrating undesirable behavior. Through play therapy and art therapy the child or adolescent can begin to reveal to the therapist and themselves what is bothering them. Often the child or adolescent does not understand or even know why they are behaving the way they are. They only know that they feel pain, worry, sometimes fear. Children often do not show the same symptoms as adults, i.e. a young boy who is acting agitated and irritable could be depressed even though he is not showing signs or symptoms that are commonly associated with depression for adults. Through beginning to understand the problem I can help the child or adolescent understand themselves as well as the parents understand the problem and how to best help their child. Individual Services: Individual counseling is a process that involves meeting one on one to help you work through painful feelings, gain new perspectives and set attainable goals.—in a confidential environment—the therapist and the client explore emotions, beliefs, or behaviors, work through challenges, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others. Pre-Marital Therapy: You just got engaged and are ready to take the next step into marriage! Congratulations! This is a great time to prepare and plan not just the wedding, but the marriage. Pre-marital counseling can be required by some religions and officiants to get married but now more and more couples regardless of requirement are choosing to check out counseling as part of the wedding preparation. Going to counseling before you make the life long commitment allows couples to explore and process life long decisions, not just the flavor of the cake. Marriage and Family Therapy: Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. Healthy marriages are good for the couples’ mental and physical health. They are also good for children; growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational and social problems. A marriage should be a safe haven in which partners are able to express their differences, anger and conflict. In marriage counseling, we work together on multiple levels. When one person in a family system is struggling significantly, the whole family struggles. Seeking marital or couples therapy can be especially helpful in fostering the full capacity of a loving relationship Additional Information: I generally meet with clients for 50 minutes on a weekly or biweekly basis, depending on your needs. If, upon contacting Dre McGee, you discover that this is not the right fit for you, you will be given referrals to other providers in town who may be more appropriate for you. Dre McGee maintains relationships with many psychotherapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists in town for collaboration, consultation and referral. Finding the right fit is important when looking for a therapist.

Through the awareness continuum and other techniques, I help interested participants develop a stronger sense of themselves and their surroundings, and most importantly, how they get in the way of life’s natural rhythm and flow. My clients invariably grow a deeper acceptance of who they are and thereby become freer to express their authentic selves in accordance with the requirements of the moment.
