Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Successful therapy means developing the ability to allow the full range of feelings which we experience daily. My role is to help you to respond rather than react from an emotionally charged place. I support you in adding meaning and depth to your life while accomplishing your chosen goals. Somatic and trauma focused therapies and my warm, flexible, interactive approach augment our collaboration. You determine the pace of our work as I keep in mind your uniqueness and need for safety. When a problem solving approach is needed, I offer tools to combat anxiety and navigate through life's hardships. I have been very successful helping individuals and couples process through deeply held emotions which are usually at the heart of trauma and conflict. With couples, this somatic approach helps reestablish the attachment bond which has often been disrupted. Healing this disruption typically enables couples to resolve their issues. Since 1988 I've been treating a broad range of issues including PTSD, anxiety, attachment issues, childhood abuse and neglect. I have enjoyed working with a wide diversity of clients. I believe the key to healing is gaining the confidence in your ability to manage and maneuver through any difficult situation. The way I work is to help clients gain self acceptance, a deeper connection with themselves and others, and maneuver through barriers to self expression, empowerment and accomplishment of goals. We begin by addressing the current issues that bring someone into therapy, exploring how current patterns relate to past relationship dynamics and gin understanding of their feelings, symptoms and behaviors. We build on the client’s strengths and resources in order to improve what works in their life. I always keep in mind clients’ unique set of needs and comfort level so that the therapy feels as safe as possible. I work collaboratively with each client to decide what to focus on as issues arise in their life and in session. We may explore issues that arise between the client and me, so that the therapy can become a kind of laboratory to practice behaviors that can then be brought into their other relationships and lives.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
San Rafael, CA

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
