Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have had a part time private practice for many years. I see a wide range of clients grappling with many of life’s challenges. I work with individuals, couples, and families, doing short term and long term therapy as well as in consultation. I use a variety of approaches including cognitive behavioral, family systems and psychodynamic. I tailor my approach to each individual, their goals and the situation. I have two areas of particular expertise. 1) I have worked with people with major psychiatric disorders and their families for decades both privately and in a variety of community mental health programs that I have directed. I am author of When Someone You Love Has a Mental Illness: A Handbook for Family Friends and Caregivers, published by Tarcher/Penguin in 1992, then revised and expanded in 2003. I have offered trainings in the U.S. and Canada to staff and family groups about a variety of topics related to mental illness and people with dual substance use and psychiatric disorders. 2) I have enjoyed working extensively with lesbians both individually and as couples.
