Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I believe strongly in an Existential approach to therapy - taking responsibility in a positive way in order to take control of your life. I have been licensed for over 35 years as a Marriage Family Therapist. I received my Bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State and my Masters from USC. For four and a half years I worked as a psychologist for the LA County Sheriff’s Department, helping officers and their families. Over the years, I have had private practices in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara and finally settled on the Central Coast in 1994. I am also a Registered Nurse and have practiced in various clinical settings ranging from Critical Care to Skilled Nursing to Hospice. Licenses: LMFT #8963 RN # 490020 Life is a journey – sometimes, along the way, we stumble and fall – sometimes we lose our way. Frequently there is neither a guide nor someone to just help us up when we have stumbled. In order to continue on our path we must take risks or we will simply stagnate. Life changes constantly. As everything around us changes, so do we, often reluctantly or begrudgingly. The hope is that as we grow and change we open ourselves to new experiences. I was 55 years old when I first started riding a motorcycle. Riding a motorcycle, for me, is much like life – you don’t get anywhere without taking risks. You learn how to ride and be safe, but you learn that no matter how safe you are, someone out there may not see you. Life can also blindside you. You ride a bike that you can handle, you live a life that you can handle. If you lose control of the bike you can go down, if you lose control of your life, it too can go down. Having someone there that can help and understand you become essential. Therapy involves risk - willingness to confront yourself and your issues. It has the potential for great growth and change. It is an adventure and should always be “your adventure”. “Therapy is a gift you give to yourself “. Therapy should always retain that quality, even when going through painful situations. Therapy with me can be enlightening and at times difficult. I will always encourage the best in my clients and support them as they take control of their lives. Sessions are usually a 50 minute hour during which critical self-examination is essential – what have you brought to your situation? Humanistic-Existentialism – emphasizing taking personal responsibility as a way of taking control of your life and your problems. Rather than encouraging a passive victim role, the focus is on taking a conscious, active, responsible role in the problem. This empowers the person in dealing with their issues. Although my orientation is grounded in Humanistic-Existentialism, because of my exposure to various forms and types of therapies over the years, I will also draw from whatever approach I feel will work best for you. About My Practice

Office Hours
Open scheduling allowing for some weekends and evenings
Population Served: Adults (18+) and Couples.... Most people have difficulty facing their own problems, feeling they should be able to overcome them on their own. Facing one’s own demons can be terrifying. Patience and support is the key. Each person will face their issues in their own time with the support, guidance and understanding. Tired of the same old arguments? No joy in the relationship? With my years of experience, I have had the opportunity to work with many couples on various issues. I use a Role-Model approach that I have developed, as well as any other techniques that I find may be useful in helping my clients achieve their goals. Working with couples can be a ‘joyous challenge’. When both sides of an issue are present, both sides can be addressed immediately and openly – regardless of what the problem may be. Each person has the opportunity to own their part of the issue. Some clients don’t like “support groups”, some just want someone to “understand”. Because of my background in both psychotherapy and nursing gained over the last 30 years, I believe I have the unique ability to integrate the skills and experience from both of these fields in the service of my clients. I have found that you cannot separate the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical sides of an individual – a problem in one area will cause a problem for the whole person. I will, with both the client’s and physician’s permission, work on a plan to help each client more effectively deal with the unique issues surrounding their chronic illness. Abuse, Assault and Trauma (PTSD) Alcohol and/or Drug Dependency Anxiety and Panic Disorders Conflict Resolution Couples/Marital Issues Depression Divorce/Blended Family Issues End of Life Issues Family Counseling Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Issues Grief Counseling Men’s Issues Pervasive Developmental Disorders Stress Management Work Conflict Resolution.... Therapy does not have to be expensive to be of benefit. I provide counseling/psychotherapy in a cost effective manner. It must be a “gift you give to yourself”. You are in therapy only as long as you need to be and you only pay what you can reasonably afford. On your first visit we will discuss fees in relationship to your ability to pay. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
