Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Hello I am Candice Ruttner-Duryea I Have been practicing in the field of Therapy for almost 9 years and I am highly trained in working in Trauma. What do I mean by trauma you might ask? Trauma is a life threatening or perceived life threatening event that leaves an individual with a sense of helplessness along with fear, horror, or disgust. Such events might include being in a car, accident house fire, or natural disaster; being raped; or being assaulted. Childhood abuse and molestation and or witnessing any of these events. Death of a loved one and or being diagnosed with a life threatening illness. These are all classified as big "T" traumas. There are other types of trauma that affect an individual on a smaller scale, but still create impairment and these are called little "t" traumas. These can include things like performance anxiety, stage freight, phobias such as fear of snakes, or heights or enclosed places. EMDR is an effective and result driven therapy to help you find relief. Does EMDR Work? Approximately 20 controlled studies have investigated the effects of EMDR. These studies have consistently found that EMDR effectively decreases/eliminates the symptoms of post traumatic stress for the majority of clients. Clients often report improvement in other associated symptoms such as anxiety. The current treatment guidelines of the American Psychiatric Association and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies designate EMDR as an effective treatment for post traumatic stress. EMDR was also found effective by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, the United Kingdom Department of Health, the Israeli National Council for Mental Health, and many other international health and governmental agencies. Research has also shown that EMDR can be an efficient and rapid treatment. I also use a new cutting edge therapy called ETT. What is ETT you might ask? Emotional Transformation Therapy (ETT) is a new therapeutic method that sets a new standard for speed of psychological treatment. ETT typically changes distressing emotions, physical pain and other symptoms within seconds. What can it be used for? •posttraumatic stress disorder •anxiety disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder •depressive disorders including major depression and seasonal affective disorder •attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) •substance addictions and behavioral addictions, such as sex addiction •physical pain syndromes •primary and secondary sleep disorders In addition it can be used to facilitate states of extreme How do we know it works? Pre and post SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) brain scans have verified that ETT dramatically changes the brain mechanisms responsible for psychological symptoms. Clinical observations over many years have shown that the outcomes tend to be long-term. How does it work? ETT utilizes precise elements of the client's visual ecology in conjunction with attachment-based interpersonal interventions to facilitate amplified attunement for the client. When light enters the eyes, photoreceptors convert light into neural impulses. These impulses travel throughout the brain and are converted into biochemical signals by integral membrane proteins. In addition to allowing people to see many of these light initiated impulses travel to non-image forming parts of the brain to stimulate emotion, facilitators can target and change the brain mechanisms responsible for a symptom. When this is done along with interpersonal interaction that heals the relationship component, the brain improves. What techniques are used? There are several processes with ETT. The Level I training includes a powerful new eye movement procedure totally unlike EMDR that has powerful rapid effects. Multidimensional eye movement (MDEM) utilizes a hand held visual target that uses the eye scan pathway to change traumatic affect and somatic symptoms in seconds. ETT also teaches the use of a specialized spectral chart for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. This technique is referred to as a "spectral resonance" technique and possesses the capacity to identify dissociation or emotional flooding before or as it takes place. This allows facilitators to either stop dissociation or reduce flooding rapidly. This highly controlled and well facilitated change in the physical and psychological process provides individuals with clearly observable changes in there life. Leaving them feeling more in control of their life.

I have helped hundreds of couples recognize the hidden obstacles that cause pain in their relationship and learn the skills needed to deepen the quality of their relationship as well as resolve conflict. For over twenty five years I have been working with heterosexual and gay couples. I do not believe in a one -size- fits- all approach to therapy.
