Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
The experience of psychotherapy can be a transformative journey. Whether the journey is brief or longer depends upon the number of issues one wishes to explore and the length of their existence. I work with both short-term and longer-term clients. In short-term therapy we collaborate to bring all aspects of a problem into awareness, clarify thoughts and feelings, explore options for change, and resolve unanswered questions. My approach with longer-term therapy is similar and produces a more fundamental shift in one's sense of self and relationship to others. It is a conduit to unconscious beliefs about ourselves and the world. When our best efforts to make positive decisions, to change our behavior or to understand our emotions fail us, you can be sure that unconscious influences are involved. This is true of everyone. Longer-term therapy allows for the revealing of unconscious influences through dreams, fantasy, the therapeutic relationship and somatic communication. A deeper understanding of ourselves can be expected to free us from old patterns and emotional burdens and to allow for a more creative and enlivened engagement in our lives.
