Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
“It is a joy to be hidden and disaster not to be found.” - Winnicott. I believe the process of understanding yourself is also a process of being “found”; but it will take courage to not go it alone, to lean into that pain while in the presence of another. Together we can discover how your life experiences have formed who you are today. We’ll talk about your difficulties, fears, or sadness. We’ll come to understand your anxiety or anger. We’ll explore why you feel depressed or stuck in a rut. And we’ll do it in a warm and safe space where we will set judgment aside. Let’s explore how you became who you are today, and perhaps along the way you’ll gain a kinder view of yourself. I have extensive experience working in English and/or Spanish with: Men and women experiencing anger, depression, bipolar, dissatisfaction with their careers, and/or midlife transition stress, Middle aged Latina women struggling with cultural and emancipatory ambivalence, Couples experiencing difficulties of distance, isolation, or infidelity, Couples/parents of young children coping with parenting stress, Angry and lost teens, substance abuse, Elementary school aged boys struggling with their emotions and fitting in, Young men struggling with anger and depression.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
