Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
To provide the client with an opportunity to develop a mental 'tool-box' of coping skills, resources and education so that he or she can feel empowered to tackle their mental health challenges and feel a sense of self efficacy and hope. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to form a unique and intimate bond with a therapist, and this relationship can, and does heal many of the struggles arising out of issues as diverse as addiction to social phobias. I want to work with the client and not take charge; I believe if people feel hopeful they can move mountains and they certainly can play a strong role in their recovery from mental illness. I believe in strength based therapy and feel such a sense of wonder as I watch a client is able use their own internal resources and resilience to work towards healing. I am also a certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor and I am passionate about working with people with addiction issues. This addiction may be to alcohol or drugs or internet pornography. I firmly believe in the disease model of addiction, and I thoroughly enjoy and feel so blessed to see people do well and recover. I understand the stages of addiction, including the relapse process and I believe in 12-step programs and I feel a strong sense of empathy for the person suffering from this disease. I have worked with clients with mood-disorders/thought disorders such as Bi-Polar Disorder and Schizophrenia and do feel that I can be of help to both the client and their family. I feel passionate about psychotherapy because it works! I believe that the relationship between the client and the therapist is inherently healing. I know there are some very serious mental illnesses; Schizophrenia, Addiction, and Bipolar Disorder for example and I believe that the intervention of therapy can provide support, comfort, education and empowerment and healing. Some disorders, like Schizophrenia have a biological component to them and psychotherapy can offer ongoing support and guidance and resources to families who are the caretakers for these men and women who suffer so very much.
