Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I believe the problems we bring to therapy carry meaning and purpose: the discovery and integration of unknown or undeveloped aspects of our personality that are striving, as part of a lifelong developmental process, to fulfill and complete our experience of ourselves and our life. Where some might see a symptom—anxiety, depressed mood, conflict in a relationship—as a problem to be fixed or as an illness to be cured, I find that the challenges we bring to therapy are also opportunities for growth and transformation. Therapy is a protected space where you can be yourself without fear of judgment or rejection. In therapy I work to help you find your way through inner conflicts and emotional difficulties. We work together to bring meaning and healing to your experience. As someone who has struggled with self-esteem and identity issues, I can help you re-frame self-defeating thoughts, resolve unconscious inner conflicts, and learn to value and trust your own experience. Therapy can help you feel more authentic, alive, and confident. I work especially well with those who have suffered trauma or abuse. If you've been hurt deeply, I'll work to help you feel safe again, creating a healthy connection to yourself and others. What this can look like is a shift from feeling empty or unloved to acceptance of your own worth and experience. As a step-parent to adult children of color, I'm sensitive to issues related to race and gender. In therapy I do my part to make the world a place where everyone feels valued and has an equal opportunity to contribute and thrive.
