Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I utilize narrative therapy practices in my work with clients. I view each of us as having ideas and intentions for how we want to live our lives, and how we would prefer to be in relationships and other facets of our lives. Yet, sometimes the struggles we encounter, and the effects of problems on us, disconnect us from these ideas, as well as the skills, abilities, beliefs and values we have developed. I appreciate narrative therapy's collaborative and respectful framework, as it privilege's the client's knowledge about him or herself. I attach great importance to who a person is despite problems and their influence on a person's behavior. In my conversations with clients, I listen closely to the stories and descriptions they use about problems they are experiencing. In their descriptions I notice times when problems haven't had as strong of a presence or influence on them. I am interested in inquiring about these times, as problems frequently bury the stories about those experiences that would speak to our successes, talents, and skills. We work together to bring to light and strengthen these buried stories. In this way clients gain a better sense of themselves, and become more empowered in changing their relationship with problem(s).

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
