Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Psychotherapy is the great gift of finding the safety in relationship that allows the exploration of our most personal and tender selves, our emotions, traumas, needs, and hopes. We sometimes enter this process in search of an elusive sense of peace; sometimes in the turmoil of personal or relationship crisis, or the pain of unrelenting depression or anxiety. Because this healing journey requires the exploration of feelings and behaviors that can evoke fear, guilt, or shame, we go most easily in the safety of trusted companionship. Because the need for psychotherapy is often accompanied by emotional vulnerability and pain, and because it can require a great deal of courage to begin, you have every right to expect an atmosphere of safety, an assurance of confidentiality, a highly trained and experienced therapist, and a genuine and authentic fellow being. Clients have described me as clinically warm and soothing, supportive, and caring, yet active and engaged. I have also been told that I have an ability to work with individuals and with members of a couple who are reluctant to be in therapy. I try to live and teach a sense of inner peace and the capacity for healthy, respectful, intimate, and loving relationships. Living a meaningful life in genuine connection can be elusive. I’d like to help.

About My Practice

Office Hours
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 9 am to 6 pm
Nearly four decades of practicing psychotherapy have given me experience with a broad range of human problems and clinical solutions. I am psychoanalytically informed and work well with issues of early life trauma, both abuse and neglect, and with current symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, loss, challenging life transitions, insomnia, and acute or chronic stress. I am comfortable facilitation changes in direction that can make the “second half of life” more deeply meaningful. I welcome individual struggling with illnesses that are chronic or terminal. In additional to psychotherapy I offer direct trauma release through the disciplines of EMDR and neurofeedback tools. Using a developmental, systems and relational orientation I work well with distressed relationships including romantic partnerships, and have a specialty working with high conflict, high risk relationships. In addition to working with long-term relationship difficulties I love working with couples in the early formative stages of their relationships by offering pre-marital counseling. Couples therapy sets aside time to set goals, resolve conflicts, improve communication, work to resolve resentments and infidelities, learn to tolerate differences, to define expectations and to build a strong and working partnership. My ability to integrate the psychoneurological (brain) research as it applies to human development and healing gives me special insight in to the complexity of the human mind and the symptoms and behaviors that result, and a cutting-edge set of skills for ameliorating pain. PPO and POS plans will often reimburse for my services; others (HMOs) require you to choose someone on their contracted provider list. You may want to check with your carrier to see if your plan will cover individual psychotherapy with licensed marriage and family therapists on an “out of network” basis.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
