Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA in Counseling from San Jose State. My earlier years of business experience have served me well in relating to workplace problems that impringe on personal relationships. I am gifted with a low-key manner and a neutral perspective that facilitates individuals and couples exploring the impact of male/female energies on relationships. With couples and families I do co-therapy with my wife, Colene Sawyer-Schlaepfer, PhD, also an MFT. My focus is on helping men create stronger emotional connections.

I know it can be scary to reach out for help, especially in a culture that tells us we should be able to solve our problems on our own and, if we can’t, there is something wrong with us. Well, I’m here to challenge that culture that values independence more than interdependence, because as humans we are designed to be connected with others in relationships. And sometimes the first relationship that needs our focused attention is the one we have with ourselves in order to ‘show up’ in our relationships with others.
