Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
There are only a few general principles that can be applied fairly universally to the psychotherapeutic endeavor. First, psychotherapy works best when clients are treated in a manner that respects their intrinsic dignity and worth. Second, every client is more unique than similar, and one single approach will not work with all clients. The art of psychotherapy is the ability to best match the specific needs of the clients with the therapist's interventions. It behooves the skilled therapist to use his or her accumulated wisdom and technical knowledge to further the clients's goals. An last, psychotherapy is an adventure that occurs within the relationship of two people, neither one of whom is in any way more intrinsically deserving than the other. Competent psychotherapy involves knowledge as well of the therapist's own limitations; a mix of humility, humor, intelligence, candor, and respect for differences should be brought to the process.
