Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Licensed in 1991 as a Marriage and Family therapist, I have been in private practice ever since. Having earned a clincal doctorate in psychoanalysis from the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies, I'm now a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytical Association, and my orientation is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic. This is an insight-oriented, developmental model that focuses on understanding and working through unconscious motivations, defenses, and conflicts. In order to become an IPA-accredited psychoanalyst, I completed 8 additional years of rigorous post-graduate education and training. This training provides the analytic psychotherapist with the expertise needed to explore and locate unconscious issues that underlie longstanding patterns and symptoms of emotional distress and dysfunctional behavior. Thus, the psychoanalyst is equipped to make interventions that get to the root of the problems. Psychoanalytic treatment is for those individuals who feel caught in these recurrent mental and emotional problems, which are likely impeding their potential to experience happiness with their partners, families and friends, as well as success and fulfillment in their work and the normal tasks of everyday life. Anxieties, inhibitions and depressions frequently are the signs of unconscious inner conflicts, which lead to difficulties in relationships and, when untreated, can have a considerable impact on personal and professional choices. As noted, the roots of these problems often go deeper than normal awareness can reach, which is why they prove irresolvable without the appropriate professional help. Successful psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis can provide significant relief from psychic pain, promote personality development and provide a self-awareness that will strengthen the patient's confidence to pursue their goals in life. The positive effects of psychoanalytic treatment can lead to further growth long after treatment has been terminated. In terms of my personal style, I am warm and empathic, and I actively work together with my patients throughout treatment. I also provide my patients with a safe and reliable non-judgmental environment.
