Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I began my career in the mental health field in 1986 working with developmentally disabled children and adolescent at Camarillo State Hospital and Developmental Center. Following completion of graduate school at Pacifica Graduate Institute in 1992 I turned my extensive experience in behavior management and developmental psychology towards improving the lives of children, adolescents, teens, and their families struggling with behavioral and emotional issues.

Since 1992 I have worked with adolescent, young adult and adult patients in many settings including County out-patient clinics, group homes, juvenile probation detention camps, juvenile hall, and private non-profit mental health clinics using both individual and family treatment. I have also facilitated many different types of group therapy including anger management, conduct disorder, criminal thinking, ADHD, grief and parent support groups. Within these settings I have also been able to share my knowledge by providing numerous staff trainings as well as supervising MFT interns working towards licensure.

Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to assist many patients and their families with such issues as ADHD, depression, anxiety, conduct disorder, parenting, substance abuse, criminal behavior, adolescent and adult Bipolar disorder, anger management, learning disabilities, special education and the effects of trauma, neglect and abuse.

Working with many different challenging populations has helped me develop a very no nonsense, down-to-earth approach to treatment that is focused on the results that patient wants to achieve. I work to achieve positive results with patients through the use of Cognitive-Behavioral therapy, behavior management techniques including stress, anxiety and anger management; focusing on early childhood experiences that are creating maladaptive coping skills and behaviors later in life, play therapy and Motivational Interviewing. I also believe many behavioral and emotional conditions can be improved by practicing a balanced, healthy lifestyle so I like to incorporate healthy diet, sleep, and exercise routines into my patient’s treatment plans.
