Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have developed a unique style of wholistic psychotherapy- meaning that complete mental health occurs through integration. Happiness is most fulfilled when there is an integration of: our mind (how and what we think), our emotions ( how we process our feelings), our spirit ( who we perceive we are) our physical self ( our relationship to our body). Therapy is a creative process. Based on thirty years of private practice experience, I have developed a "framework" for healthy change based on steps towards integration. I use "mindfulness" as a theme to cultivate awareness and exploration. We begin with uncovering our unconscious material and integrating it with our conscious. I use elements from traditional psychotherapies, primarily psycho-dynamic and family systems theories, to uncover and identify ingrained negative patterns that govern our behaviors. We are able to articulate our "triggers." Lasting change can occur when we integrate cognitive/behavioral techniques ( shaping thoughts and behavior) with this knowledge of our past programming to attain new perceptions and shifts in thinking and acting. With a focus of connection in the moment, our work together is progressive and creative. I find it useful to use i research in quantum physics and spiritual psychology ( how we perceive ourselves and our connections) to create deeper awareness and acceptance. My clients experience true change by changing their perceptions, thoughts, and feelings. Using tools of hypnosis/ progressive relaxation, mindfulness, dreams and intuition helps facilitate the natural process of healing. Working with couples is a specialty of mine. I find there are basic pitfalls to intimacy and happiness in couples, and I help each couple identify them. I get excellent results by helping the couple understand their individual issues based on their family upbringing and beliefs. These insights can then prevent each person from projecting their own issues ( past hurts ) into the current relationship. Each person in the couple learns how to communicate their own true feelings, which brings intimacy and freedom to the relationship. I observe the subtleties in the room- feelings and behaviors- to create an opening for a change in ones experience in the "now." I attempt to break down the problems of each unique relationship into understandable and absorbable pieces. Issues of dependence and independence, closeness and distance, accepting differences, wounds and coping skills, power struggles, projection and communication are all addressed in a direct manner. I teach couples how to navigate, survive, and flourish in marriage with humor, knowledge and insight into human nature. I see couples in all stages of relationships. Whether a couple has just met, are about to be married, are newly married, are in a long term marriage, are divorced or remarried, there are basic patterns of conflict and intimacy within each couple that need to be excavated. I am currently writing a book for couples, outlining the pitfalls to intimacy and the steps to a healthy and evolving relationship. I am the co-creator of a weekend experience called Sacred Theatre, which combines movement, drumming, scared journey, meditation, psychodrama, and voice to create a transformational journey. I am a clinical therapist consultant for Moonview Sanctuary in Santa Monica.
