Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I am a mother and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with special training in Attachment, Child Development, Play and Art Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy. I view children’s behavior within the context of their whole family, their history and their developmental stage. My focus is always the child, not the “problem”. In all things I aim to show children respect and acceptance. In so doing, I build a unique trusting relationship, which is the basis of therapy. Empathizing with children and showing them compassion has always been my nature. As the youngest of five children, I was the observant one, with a special sensitivity for all that isn’t said. These skills of perception were formed from a young age through my own experiences with family discord. At age six I first started talking about wanting to be a child psychologist. So, it is my actual dream come true to be a psychotherapist working with children. I consider this to be my life’s work.

About My Practice

Office Hours
Saturdays 9am-2pm
I offer psychotherapy for families with young children. I work closely with parents by meeting with you once per month in order to not only stay in touch, but to offer therapeutic support to your whole family, your marriage and your co-parenting partnership, all of which effect the outcome of my work with children. My office is a playroom in which children are free to express themselves through toys, art and verbal interchange. Play is a child’s natural vocation. We adults think of therapy as the “talking cure” but for children, play is their language. A child at play is in their own element, not being asked to accommodate an adult’s world of reasoning, explaining, and planning. Rather, through play therapy, the therapist joins the child in their world of meaning, experience and emotion. This is the key to building a unique relationship in which the child feels fully seen, heard and accepted. Within this relationship play becomes catharsis. The child works through inner conflicts surrounding trust, power and control. “Play provides a means through which conflicts can be resolved and feelings can be communicated…Play gives concrete form and expression to children’s inner world,” (Gary Landreth, PhD). Art is another intuitive form of self-expression for children. I may ask a child to draw a family portrait, a self-portrait, a time when they remember feeling safe, angry, etc. This process is itself a time of self-exploration and a means to building our relationship.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Carlsbad, CA

I provide a therapeutic environment that allows individuals and couples to explore ideas, beliefs, life experiences, thoughts and feelings that may stand in the way of being who you truly want to be. I can help point out repeating dysfunctional patterns that may exsist in relationships at home, at work and with friends and family.I teach people how to respond in their lives versus getting caught in reacting to personalities and events.
