Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have a warm, relational, client-centered approach that is grounded in mindfulness and acceptance. I see therapy as a place to explore the personal meanings of your experience, to broaden your perspective, to open the heart, and to take steps for real change in your life. With this in mind, I partner with my clients to create a relationship that is both supportive and challenging. I practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an evidence-based framework that integrates cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness meditation. We try to break unhelpful habits of the mind and to bring a kind awareness to your present moment experience. This is how you get to know yourself better from the inside-out and build on your inner resources. I enjoy working with a diverse group of clients, and I have a special commitment to LGBTQ+ health and wellness. I specialize in working with gay men to break through shame and internalized homophobia and to build healthy and rewarding relationships. If you feel that we may work well together, please contact me to set up a free consultation.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
