Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Overcoming personal, relationship and family issues can feel like an overwhelming challenge without a trusted other to share the journey, especially during difficult passages and life-stage transitions. I will work to establish a safe environment and support you in understanding and addressing the dynamics that are causing the issues that are fueling your discomfort. Whether I am working individually, with couples or families, I help you identify your unique gifts, resources, and skills so that you are better equipped to face and overcome the obstacles that are keeping you from your greatest joy. I see all types of clients, and specialize in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer, intersex and asexual persons. I studied affirmative LGBT+ psychology and received training at the LA LGBT Center equipping me with compassionate understanding to help individuals, couples & families that are struggling with identity challenges. Cognizant of how different cultures, genders, orientations, age and personality influence emotional expression, my presence can provide a stabilizing and affirming environment for families that are engaged in struggles to differentiate and adapt to any type of gender identity, sexual orientation or other lifestyle or life-stage transition.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
