Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Maaliea utilizes a friendly and compassionate approach to the work she does with her clients. She finds a way to relate to those she sees, while using their strengths to set goals and begin heading towards solutions. Through her experience, it has become clear that the struggles her client’s face differ from one to another and need individualized attention. When working with Maaliea, collaboration and flexibility are seen as necessary components of the therapeutic relationship, while skill-building and problem resolution are used to help her client’s find comfort and success. Maaliea aims to keep the lives of her client’s moving forward with a sense of optimism and hope. Although Maaliea enjoys and is trained to work with a broad range of clinical issues including depression, anxiety, behavioral issues, and life transitions, she has special interest working with the many challenges of the teenage years, as well as individuals and families struggling with alcohol and substance issues. Maaliea’s interest in the field of psychology was ignited through her passion for working with children and teenagers. Prior to attending San Jose State University and receiving her bachelor and masters degrees, Maaliea worked in a variety of child and family related positions. These included volunteering as a mentor for emotionally disturbed children and teens, working as a visitation monitor for children who had suffered abuse, and offering support services to teens in detox and early recovery from drugs and alcohol. After discovering this was her careers calling, she pursued bachelor degrees in both child and adolescent development and psychology, and then her Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology. After completing her degrees, Maaliea broadened her spectrum of experience by working in various setting with diverse populations. She continued her work with substance abusing teens as a therapist in an adolescent treatment facility, she worked as a behavioral specialist with children, teens and their families, she became a group therapy facilitator with domestic violence perpetrators, while also working as a therapist in non-profit community clinics as well as local school elementary, middle, and high schools. Currently, Maaliea works as a therapist with Good Samaritan Hospitals Outpatient Behavioral Health Department and also in private practice in Los Gatos. Currently, Maaliea serves on the Drug Free Community Committee of Los Gatos, as well as being a member of the Moms Council for the online editorial the Los Gatos Patch. On a personal note, Maaliea enjoys spending time with her friends whom she has known since childhood, traveling to Tahoe for an amazing day boarding at Heavenly, long runs to clear her brain, Sunday breakfasts with her family, a day at home with her new baby and husband, and of course a daily latte on her drive over the hill.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
