Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
My name is Marla Bartow and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have lived and worked in Del-Norte County since 1999. My work here has provided me with a broad range of experiences working with children and their families. I now have the opportunity to provide therapeutic services from my private practice. The therapeutic relationship is designed to help people overcome difficult challenges in life. My counseling style draws heavily from client-centered, psychoanalytic and non-directive theories and techniques. Adhering to a strong belief in the development, maintenance, and termination of the therapeutic relationship. The therapeutic process often creates increased awareness possibly leading to increased discord. It is important to acknowledge the challenge of engaging in the therapeutic process and to make realistic goals and commitments. As your counselor I am committed to keeping all of the information you provide, including your status as a client, confidential. However, as a state mandated reporter, the following are exceptions to the ability I have to maintain your confidentiality. 1) Child Abuse (physical, sexual, neglect, psychological). 2) Elder Abuse; When a person 65 years or older suffers physical, sexual, and/or financial abuse. 3) Endangerment to self or others. 4) Court Orders; Judge may order therapist to provide information.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
