Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I've been in private practice in Benicia, CA for twenty-two years. Prior to opening a private practice, I was co-director of the Adult Day Treatment Program at First Hospital Psychiatric. I've also worked at the Concord Vet Center with veterans and their families and Parent's United for victims of molest and their families. I'm a compassionate and interactive therapist. Often people coming to therapy for the first time are feeling very anxious.I don't find it helps to stare at them until they speak. I'm non-judgmental and take pride in the number of individuals, couples, and families who've sought and received care over the years I've been in practice. Communication, at home or professionally, is often one of the core issues people have, whether they are depressed and not able to ask for what they need, anxious and misunderstood, frustrated and finding themselves blowing up and still not getting their needs met, needing more love, attention, affection, intimacy from partners and not knowing how to get it or not knowing how to talk to a boss or co-worker. Gaining an understanding of what isn't working and how to change it is a way to a happier, more satisfying life. No one should go through life feeling anxious, depressed, lonely, misunderstood, and unheard, when there are ways to transform the negative problem into positive energy, to learn about how childhood development leaves scars that affect an adult's interaction with others and how unknown coping mechanisms that worked for the adult as a child, could be working against the person as an adult. Withdrawing and isolating might have worked to stay out away from parental anger but can be disastrous if a partner wants to have a difficult but non-violent discussion. This is just one example of a coping mechanism working for a child and backfiring for that child as an adult. There are many other ways the child learns to be that don't work for the same person in the adult world. Depriving oneself or being self-destructive are two common issues today, such as dieting or excessive drinking or smoking. Get to the heart of the real problem and make positive progress toward mastering the problem. Too often people aren't as good to themselves as they are to others. They don't understand why they feel anxious and depressed most of the time. Learn in therapy about how you aren't good to yourself and master ways to take better care of yourself. As a writer and collaborator with visual artists, I have insight into creative blocks and the development of a creative life. I have worked with many gay and transgender clients as well as heterosexual, bi-sexual people and people in open marriages and relationships. I also help people who are uncomfortable with their sexual preferences and want to develop a healthier and more accepting attitude toward themselves. I am a certified Master Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist. I'm open to all modalities of therapy, talk therapy, hypnotherapy, Internet and phone sessions. If you prefer or are not able to come to my office, I am available for weekend and late night sessions via Skype (depending on the time), email, IM, and phone.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
San Rafael, CA

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
