Personal Statement:
Melissa Morais Parr is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and works for the YMCA Youth & Family Services. Melissa has been working with children, teens and their families since 2005. Melissa is the Program Director for Counseling Services, COMPASS, and Healthy Start Building Bridges Programs. Melissa oversees these three program areas, provides supervision for staff, and conducts trainings. Melissa has been with the Y since 2008, first volunteering while working toward her master's degree in marriage and family therapy. Melissa volunteered in the YMCA TIDES program, providing individual, family, and group counseling to students and their families. Since graduating from Alliant International University with a master's degree, Melissa worked as a therapist in the TIDES program, providing services to students and their families at San Diego High School. At San Diego High School, Melissa has collaborated extensively with school staff in order to bridge communication between students, their families and the school staff. Melissa has assisted teachers and school counselors in creating safety plans and developing strategies on how to respond to behavioral difficulties that may be exhibited by her clients in class. Melissa has also assisted parents in advocating for their children within the school system to ensure proper support. Melissa has completed the Special Education Advocacy Program at USD. Melissa has also received training in Bowen Family Systems, domestic violence, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Co-Occurring Disorders (Dual-Diagnosis), and has a Level 1 Certification of Gottman Couples Training. Melissa uses a family-systems approach and works in collaboration with children, teens and their parents/caregivers to assist with an increased understanding of their relationships with themselves and others. Melissa continues to see a small caseload of therapy clients, including individuals, families, children/teens, and couples.
