Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
My therapeutic orientation with adults and teens is client-centered and humanistic, based especially on the work of Carl Rogers and Virginia Satir. Rogers felt it was important for a therapist to listen “acceptantly” to the client. This approach models for the client the notion of listening to oneself, and also encourages a non-judgmental self-acceptance. Satir encouraged the healing potential within each client; the therapist’s task to help the client to find and utilize their own resources. She compared this process to that of nurturing a flower to grow and blossom, a therapeutic image I particularly like. With children, I use the non-directive (also called child-centered) play therapy model of Virginia Axline, who studied with Rogers. The principle goal is to remove impediments to the child's development while offering the child a unique opportunity for enhanced expression and growth. Child-centered play therapy is a complete therapeutic system that is appealing to children and parents and has proven efficacy in use with a varied range of presenting issues from mild to severe.
