Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Most of my work as a therapist has been with children, adults and couples. I am trained in different modalities but work mainly within a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy model. Not only has empirical research proven Cognitive behavioral therapy’s efficacy, but I also have personally seen patients thriving in this model. For those who are interested in revealing their unconscious content and perhaps understand how repressed earlier emotions and experiences affect current decision-making, behavior, and relationships, I also have a passion for psychodynamic/analytic work. When working with children I implement play and art therapy. Children often don’t have the ability to identify what it is that they are feeling and needless to say, they often don’t have the vocabulary to name those feelings (This is also true for many adults). My priority with children is to implement the CBT model through play/art therapy to help them identify their emotions, identify the thought processes that contribute to those emotions and change those negative thoughts to more realistic thought patterns. All this is done by using directive (as opposed to nondirective) play therapy, as I usually use more input to help speed up results. When working with couples, I gravitate more towards the attachment based model. Couples who avoid expressing their feelings put themselves at greater risk of becoming emotionally distant and ultimately isolate and disconnect completely. Therefore, I help couples bring out the emotions and thoughts that they fear expressing to each other. In addition, I focus on helping the partners to communicate more effectively, identify and fix the repetitive, negative interaction cycles, help maintain a sense of intimacy, promote strengths and build resilience in the relationship.

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Redding, CA 96001

Approximately half of Dr. Copitch's practice involves children and families. The other half is devoted to individual therapy. And, as Dr. Copitch often jokes, "the third half of my work is devoted to school consultations, business consultations, and corporate trainings."
