Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
For over twenty years, I have been listening to life stories of many incredible people. It is part of my job as a psychotherapist, licensed marriage and family therapist. Many people might think I am listening to their problems, but I don’t. I hear stories about life struggles that involve depression, loneliness, break ups, addictions, feeling overwhelmed, coming out, trauma, relationship problems, HIV/AIDS, life direction, work stress, aging, insecurity, and codependency. People who come to me are brave storytellers. It is a privilege to hear a personal mythology that has never been shared before. I help clients resolve their life related difficulties by relying on my two decades of counseling experience and many years of research and study in the field of mental health. I draw knowledge and guidance not only from listening to my clients but also from the following modalities: somatic psychotherapy, mindfulness, contemporary psychoanalysis, Jungian psychology, dream work, sand play therapy, cognitive therapy, and Eastern psychology. Since I am skilled at goal-oriented, problem focused and time-efficient therapy, I can support my clients’ goal achievement. I also had the privilege of serving as a teacher for the Doctoring 1 program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, teaching medical students about clinical skills, empathy, and psychological factors that impact patient health. Teaching has enhanced my ability to discuss complex psychological factors in an easier to understand fashion. Finally, I have written and lectured on topics related to goal setting, embracing creativity, mindfulness, LGBTQ rights, internalized homophobia, spirituality, healthy relationships, depression, addictions, stress management, and improving relationship with self and others. At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
