About My Practice

Office Hours
Low sex marriage? Lost desire? Worried you'll break up - or dating again? Do you feel distant from your partner - more like a roommate??? My additional research, experience, and training in sexual counseling and education means i can address what many therapists cannot. As a sex therapist, i was FIRST a generalist like other psychotherapists, and became a SPECIALIST in sexuality, intimacy issues, sexual health (in addition to your MD), relationship and marital functioning and happiness. Painful sex? Erection or orgasm problems? Disability/illness impacting your family and interpersonal relationships? I have extra certifications to help you with these issues within the context of your life. Orientation related issues? Sex counseling certification involves much study and experience with diverse individuals of all orientations and relationship styles including LGTBQ and polyamory. Sexual abuse in your past - or now? Sex and love should NOT be painful or scary! I urge you to call. You CAN thrive - not just survive. I'm a seasoned family & relationship clinician with a doctorate in psychology & additional national certification as clinical sexologist. I've completed research, and counseled hundreds of individuals and couples, on issues and the variety of arrangements in modern marriage including sexuality in long term relationships. I am also experienced in positive management of chronic illness and disabilities or injury experienced by individuals, and the impact of those experiences on intimacy and on family life. My additional expertise in relationships including sexuality, & my multi-modal, holistic approach means I have specific information and tools to help you reconnect with, and feel comfortable dealing with, intimate issues. My doctoral level training in psychology and license as a marriage and family therapist insures that i can comprehensively address all issues impacting your life, relationship, and family. These days, families come in all configurations and types. Expectations and demands of modern marriage exceed most people's abilities - unless they are superwoman/man! Children don't come with instruction booklets, and neither do relationships. Our culture is fairy tale oriented, helping us all grow up believing that loving the right person is all it takes to succeed as partner, friend, lover, parent, co-home owner, career person, and elderly parent caretaker - sometimes all at once! It's no wonder that couple relationships suffer under the weight of these important life responsibilities and roles. Does it mean busy parents who are career minded or couples of all sorts and ages in this complex world can't have a good intimate life in the face of life's demands? People of all ages, lifestyles, orientations, and abilities can share intimacy in relationships. The most common complaint presented to many types of physicians and psychotherapists, and to sex therapists in the U.S. is that of low sex relationship. We are taught to believe that all it takes is finding the right man/woman - and in the beginning of the relationship is often a romantic and sexy energy that many couples feel will never go away - at least they can't imagine that things will change as much as they often do. The causes for this change, and for subsequent problems that many couples experience with closeness and intimacy, are myriad and usually can be addressed. All kinds of things impact intimacy including: stage of life/family life, stress, lack of or incorrect knowledge, cultural/societal influences, health, background, individual mental or emotional problems (incl. depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD and others) attention problems, and many more!!! so you see - its not YOU, and its not just YOUR relationship that's run into these issues. Unfortunately general training for marriage and family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and physicians does not include specific scientific and clinical treatment approaches for sexual and intimacy issues. Therefore, if help with other issues common to couples does not help your sex life come back - you need to consult a certified sex therapist who does have the specific scientific and clinical training. So - a certified sex therapist is qualified to help you with ALL relationship issues, and possibly family and mental health issues depending on that sex therapists other degrees; but a general MFT, psychologist, physician and other general clinicians are NOT qualified to help you with direct and in-depth approaches to intimacy and sexuality within the context of your life and/or your relationships. In addition my first decade of work as a family scientist makes me uniquely qualified to offer cutting edge help with the many family issues often involved with marital/relationship functioning and happiness, and to offer family counseling when needed. Reaching out for help is difficult for many people. Seeking help with sexuality and intimacy can be even more nerve-wracking! It is part of my job to help you feel comfortable and safe discussing your intimate life and the often painful and confusing situations so many people struggle with. I hope you will send me an email or give me a call - all messages are confidential, only I will hear them. I look forward to meeting you! All orientations. See lovehelp.US and modernfamilies.US email

AASECT Certification - professional sex counselor/clinical sexologist Arthritis Foundation - support group leader for arthritis/chronic illness/disabilities Amer Assoc of Sexuality Educators, Counselors & Therapists is the only internationally recognized certifying organization for sex therapy. Certification requires minimum of a Master's degree in counseling, fulfillment of required coursework, hundreds of hours of supervised counseling with sexual issues of couples and individuals. Arthritis support group leadership is a certification once offered by the Arthritis Foundation. Due to growing insurance concerns, "support" group is no longer a category of training offered, but certification does not have expiration. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, have run groups and educational meetings, and offer private counseling to persons with disabilities, chronic illness including arthritis and related diseases and their families.

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
