Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Most of my experience, as well as my primary therapeutic focus, has been working with individuals and families of individuals suffering from major mental illness, along with the psychological conditions frequently associated with it such as personality disorders and self-medication with legal and illegal substances. The therapeutic goal in this work is no different than with any other client population: improving one's life (personal growth) through self-acceptance and recognition (celebration) of one's strengths. As therapist I am actively engaged, a caring albeit personally detached participant in the ongoing real or symbolic conversation with the family and the significant others in my clients's life. Here my work is helping the client identify the role(s) they have historically taken within the family and in the broader social context, and to help them develop and strengthen goals that are their own rather than the reactive outcome of those roles. The individual whose life has been deformed by a disabling mental illness may through self-acceptance and self-knowledge learn to live a generally satisfying and productive life within the broader community. In view of the challenges of such a project, success is equal in all respects to achieving spiritual enlightenment. What more could a human being ask
