Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have a successful psychotherapy practice in the Napa Valley since 1983. The major emphasis of my practice is the treatment of eating disorders, addictions, bipolar disorder and depression. I have special training in sex addiction treatment. I have been in recovery since 1981. Being in recovery gives me special insight into treating people with addictive problems.

My approach to psychotherapy is eclectic. I use whatever approach works! I am very pragmatic and practical. I am also patient and empathic and understand the struggle in gaining insight into oneself. I do refer for medication evaluations when necessary.

I have been married for 17 years and raised a step-daughter since she was 7 years old. She graduated with honors from UC Santa Cruz and is now happily married, studying to become a math and science teacher for high school students. She is also a pilot! It was not all rosy for us as a family and at times we required family therapy to help us get through some rough spots.

I really believe in therapy as a way to heal. It does not replace a spiritual process. But therapy used properly can relieve symptoms, and give a person a healing relationship that enables them an anchor so that they can do things in life that perhaps they never could have done before. Sometimes a person only uses therapy once. Others go in and out of therapy. Some decide to stay in therapy as it gives them a support. Whatever choice is made, it works!

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
San Rafael, CA

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
