Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I earned my Masters degree in Counseling Psychology at California State University Northridge in 2004. I have extensive experience using play therapy and sand-tray therapy with children, families and individuals who find it harder to express themselves verbally. These expressive therapies allow me to work on a deeper level as they access a different part of the brain than traditional talk therapy. I love working with children to help them overcome challenges and see their own strengths and abilities. Being an enthusiastic mom means that setting limits in a loving way comes easy to me. I have also spent 7 years working at eating disorder treatment centers, both inpatient and residential where I learned to work on a somatic level, to practice mindfulness and meditation with clients, to use assertiveness training to empower people to communicate their needs more clearly and positive psychology. I learned to examine the adaptive function of eating disorders and use this to inform an individualized treatment approach. I enjoy the process of supporting people to develop a loving relationship with their body and a balanced approach to food. Letting go of emotional dependence on food or exercise is often a scary process, but with a team approach including therapist, nutritionist, physician and group support it can be achieved gradually. Currently I am using my personal 12-Step Recovery and clinical experience with recovering addicts at a residential treatment center for chemical dependency. As their primary therapist I facilitate an intimate group for families and recovering addicts to encourage a compassionate approach and healthy limit setting. Anxiety and depression are often co-morbid with eating disorders and other addictions and I use both cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic methods to treat them. I also use a family systems approach and examine the context of your mental health in terms of family and cultural influence. I will help you to create a living environment that supports your recovery process as much as possible. My British background makes me particularly aware of and sensitive to multi-cultural issues and how to critique aspects of our culture that don't support self-acceptance or diversity. I have a strong faith that recovery is possible and available to all of us. In my work I use the sacred space of the therapeutic relationship to create a safe and loving environment in which to heal old wounds. My passion is empowering people to identify and communicate their needs and desires and to make conscious choices about their relationships with themselves and others.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
