Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I believe that change is possible for anyone, even when they're not sure they want it! It's common for those with eating disorders and addictions to be in two minds about getting help or to be afraid of the recovery process. Over a decade of working at eating disorder and addiction treatment centers, (both residential and outpatient), taught me to examine the adaptive functions or underlying emotional needs and use this to inform an individualized treatment approach. My approach uses cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge negative thinking patterns and reduce behavioral problems, but also applies attachment theory to explore relationship issues that may be preventing growth. I sometimes work on a somatic level, practice mindfulness and meditation with clients, and use assertiveness training to empower people to communicate their needs more clearly. I enjoy the process of supporting people to develop a loving relationship with their Self, (the most important relationship we have after all), their body and a balanced approach to food. Letting go of emotional dependence on anything is often a scary process, but with a team approach including therapist, nutritionist, physician and group support it can be achieved gradually. Anxiety and depression are often co-morbid with addiction and eating disorders. I use a family systems approach and examine the context of your mental health in terms of family and cultural influence. I will help you to create a living environment that supports your recovery process as much as possible. My British background makes me particularly aware of and sensitive to multi-cultural issues and how to critique aspects of our culture that don't support self-acceptance or diversity. I have a strong faith that recovery is possible and available to all of us. In my work I use the sacred space of the therapeutic relationship to create a safe and loving environment in which to heal old wounds. My passion is empowering people to identify and communicate their needs and desires and to make conscious choices about their relationships with themselves and others.
