Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
In January of ’89 I sat in a classroom with other prospective students of Marriage and Family Therapy, many like myself, in the midst of dramatic career transitions. I sat, transfixed as Chris Varnes explained the transformational process, both personal and vocational that encompass the decision to enter the Calfam (Phillips) MFT program. While the program was indeed exciting and intriguing, the quality that truly attracted me was the personally engaging way that Chris addressed the group. She spoke about the program and what drew her to the field and what she found compelling about working with individuals and families seeking to expand their capacity for living fulfilling and happy lives. Truthfully, it wasn’t so much what Chris spoke about; it was the special way she regarded us as she spoke to us. I felt accepted and accepting; I was in the presence of someone who was unique and unapologetically herself. She was both seeing and allowing herself to be seen, by each and every person in the room. This highly unusual person was allowing me to comprehend something essential about her, while transmitting a curiosity and loving acceptance of I and the other individuals in the room. She asked us for input and then listened – why were we there?” What did we hope to accomplish? Chris was modeling then what I strive to do each day in my practice of Individual and Family Therapy – to create for the brave traveler on the road to personal growth, what is truly possible, with the proper guidance and support.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
