Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
My Practice, over the years has changed somewhat. When I began this wonderful rewarding work my focus was on Anxiety Disorders: Panic disorder and Agoraphobia. For many years I worked with a partner treating people using a behavioral/cognitive model. We had a center that treated people in a group setting. The group met weekly for 3 months. We offered a structured program, with lessons planned for each week. The material dealt with the criteria for diagnosis of Panic disorder; the process of discovery/ recovery, including medical referrals for medication, desensitization, the teaching of relaxation techniques, behavior modification, assertiveness training.....and skills for coping with symptoms. Sometimes, in order to get people into the group from their homes we sent field workers to their homes to desensitize them to their fears so that they could tolerate coming to the group once a week. Each member of the group could come with their very own support person, a husband or a wife, a sister, or a parent. When individuals finished their group experience many now had the ability to tolerate and focus on specific personal issues in an individual settings. Over the years my area of focus has changed and at this time I am working in group settings and in individual settings helping clients to learn skills to process major life changes such as divorce, death, empty nest, losses of any kind that require transformations and re-invention of ones self. Additionally, until very recently I worked as staff therapist for a very large day camp from 1980-2009. In that position I did very short term problem solving for children experiencing difficulty adjusting to separation from parents, children having issues with other children or staff members, parent's anxieties about separation, children acting out, and issues between staff members.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
