Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
-I hold to the belief that all people have the potential to achieve the healing, growth they desire and reach their goals. As a practitioner, my role is to support my clients in achieving a higher level of health, connection and joy. I believe my authenticity, empathy and non-judgment with my clients are key in forging a collaborative therapeutic relationship based on mutual trust and respect. I am comfortable supporting clients from a varied age range, sexual orientation and genders as well as diverse ethic and cultural backgrounds. -My extensive experience in bereavement counseling has honed skills to support people coping with profound grief and loss, depression, anxiety, stress, life transitions, family conflict, aging, identity, spiritual exploration, etc. Training in behavior modification at Mayo Clinic informs my work with clients coping with addiction or who desire behavior change. -Working within YWCA has given me training necessary to support clients seeking to recover from trauma. I use a Jungian-based technique (MBTI related) to aid clients interested in exploring career-development, relationship building and life purpose. Additionally, I incorporate motivational interviewing, somatic and mindfulness techniques into work with clients.

Donna J. Shanahan M.A.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
