Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have been working as a psychotherapist since 1993, and in private practice since 1999. I see individuals, couples, adolescents, children and families and work with these clients on issues related to: relationships, trauma and abuse, sexuality, parenting, domestic violence, life transitions and chronic illness. I have worked with local agencies and programs over the past 15 years as a therapist for emotionally disturbed adolescents; child, teen, and adult sexual abuse survivors; and adult and adolescent sex offenders, as well as with the families of these varying client populations. I have specialized in working with adolescents, with abuse-focused psychotherapy and with sexuality issues. I practice from an eclectic theoretical orientation, that is I am familiar and comfortable with a variety of theoretical perspectives and interventions and utilize those which best fit the needs of my clients. In addition to my practice, I have been an instructor for Sonoma State University (in Rohnert Park, CA) Extended Education Program, since 1985, teaching courses in child abuse assessment, reporting and treatment to teachers, therapists, social workers and nurses; and since 1991 providing the 7-hour seminar in child abuse issues required by the BBS. I have also taught the 10-hour seminar in human sexuality required by the BBS. Most recently, I have been a part-time faculty member with the graduate Department of Counseling at SSU, co-teaching Relationship & Sexuality Counseling for students in the program.

My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, supportive, and interactive. My work is based on establishing a safe environment where trust can grow. I view symptoms as a way to call attention to unrecognized needs and unexpressed feelings. The goals of treatment include; learning to identify and express emotions, learning to set appropriate boundaries, developing skills such as self-soothing and impluse control and improving self-esteem.
