Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I’m passionate about living with authenticity and integrity and helping others do the same. This shows up in the many types of work I’ve done, volunteer and otherwise. As a young woman I struggled with many issues typical and atypical of women living in the late 20th century. Though I lived most of my life in Los Angeles, I spent eight years in the small progressive town of Olympia, Washington, often recognized as part of the Riot Grrrl movement. Inspired and taught by the many different people I met during that time, I began my own journey towards healing and empowerment. I earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts at The Evergreen State College, with a focus on political economy and social change. An active part of my community, I participated in many social justice organizations and also began integrating professional writing into my life. In 2002 I earned an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Antioch University Los Angeles. During my graduate career, I edited a literary journal and two years later, I helped co-found a reading series to support the writing community at large. Over the years I’ve gained experience in facilitating groups, taught creative writing to youth in juvenile detention facilities as well as university-level composition and creative writing classes, and continued work on my own writing projects. Maintaining a level of purpose and meaning in the often difficult world of publishing equips me with a perspective that helps and supports other writers and artists who face similar issues. I began training in psychotherapy at the Southern California Counseling Center in 2009, where I participated in extensive, year-long trainings with a focus on psychotherapy with individuals as well as with families, couples and children. In 2010 I received my M.A. in Clinical Psychology. In the time since I have also become a parent, which gives me perspective on the challenges inherent when juggling creative, professional and family obligations. My own life experiences have prepared me to be a dynamic, adaptive, and compassionate helper to people dealing with issues of trauma, grief, anxiety and creating/maintaining balance in our often hectic world. Client-centered, I allow what comes up in the room to guide how we will work together—which might mean we look at and process the past or stay in the here-and-now, a combination of both, or something else entirely. I’m especially sensitive to those people and communities who have felt traditionally pathologized by the psychology/mental health community. Above all, I am committed to creating a safe, grounding, compassionate space for clients to be themselves, know themselves, heal and expand on their own strengths and capabilities to live their most fulfilling lives.
