Our New Year's Resolution: A Mental Health Check-Up
The start of a year brings with it excitement and enthusiasm. In January, thousands of Californians will vow to start the year off "right" by establishing a New Year's resolution and vowing to stick with it. Many of us set goals to shed a few of the extra holiday pounds, create a financial plan or spend more time with our loved ones. It is a great time of year to reflect on the past year and set goals for the year ahead.
While setting your New Year's resolution, it is important to keep in mind one key aspect of your wellbeing - mental health. Mental health is important to overall health and nplays a critical role in living well. A great way to achieve mental wellness is through talk therapy. Talk therapy can help you address mental health issues and help you discover new ways to understand your difficulities, develop new skills to help you cope with life's demands and improve your relationships with the people around you.
Despite the importance of mental wellness and the role therapy can play in achieving it, more than one in four Californians say they could benefit from therapy but don't get it, according to a survey commissioned by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists in 2011.
