Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Many people come to see me after the death of a loved one, a separation or divorce, or another milestone which has triggered existential anxiety or depression—such as a recent diagnosis, the birth of a new child, job loss or retirement. Often these times offer opportunities to explore old patterns of belief or behaviors which may no longer serve you. They also may be a time of spiritual opening. Where appropriate to your particular way of making meaning, I integrate my experience of years of spiritual practice and meditation, as well as professional training in spiritual guidance. Other clients come because they want to integrate traumatic experiences from childhood or from a more recent time, which are interfering with current relationships or with being fully engaged in life. Some need help defining who they are, in carving out a unique identity. I integrate depth psychotherapy (exploring your experience in your family of origin; dreamwork; and drawing on the therapeutic relationship that develops between us) with the recent findings of attachment research, neuropsychology, and mindfulness. I also have training and experience in Jungian psychology, family sytems work, EMDR, expressive arts therapy, and cognitive-behavioral techniques. I believe that it is essential to have a wide range of techniques from which to draw, as each person is unique and each may benefit from something different. Thus, I draw on 20 years of experience to craft a treatment plan to fit your needs. With children, I do play and art therapy to help them to express feelings they may not be able to articulate. I involve parents in the treatment plan. With couples, I utilize the Gottman technique. My style is warm, gentle, and interactive, and I use humor in the healing process.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
