Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Beginning a course of therapy, whether for yourself or for your child, is an act of loving commitment. I see therapy as a collaborative process, something we do together as you or your child navigate through stuck patterns and toward health and wholeness. My style is warm, relational, and sincere. With both child and adult clients, I work actively with thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. My office is calming and inviting, and equipped for both play therapy with children, and hands-on somatic therapy with adults. We can do either brief goal-oriented work or longer-term depth work. An experienced former school counselor, I specialize in working with children ages 4 and above. I am equally comfortable doing symbolic play on the floor with kindergarteners, and real-talking with adolescents. I consult regularly with caregivers - the work you do at home with them is at least equally important. In my work with adults, I specialize in somatic, or body-oriented, approaches. I have a massage table in my office, and often integrate fully clothed touch work. I find this to be a highly effective method of connecting with your direct experience of yourself. From here change unfolds.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
