Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I have twelve years of experience in the field of psychotherapy for individuals, couples, and families, including dream work. We work towards the reducing symptoms or distressing behaviors, and we work on problems in personal and professional relationships. I have also had experience working with groups of both victims and perpetrators in the field of domestic-violence treatment. I maintain a private practice in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in University City. My training in psychology was completed at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, where I am adjunct faculty in the doctoral program in depth psychology. I am a graduate of the adult analytic training program of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. I also hold a doctorate in English from New York University and a masters in art from San Diego State University. My extensive background in the humanities provides me with a unique approach to the process of therapy. I am also Professor of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University, where I direct SDSU Press, and a permanent visiting professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, Brazil. At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
