Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I am a Licensed Martial and Family Therapist. I have over 14 years of working with individuals and couples. With couples, my expertise includes helping distressed couples with communication, emotional and physical intimacy, and conflict management issues. I do preventative work with couples who wish to deepen and divorce/affair proof their relationship. I also conduct premarital counseling using the evidence based Prepare/Enrich program. Although every couple is unique and I work collaboratively with each couple on their goals, examples of some of the specific goals I have helped couples with include; affair recovery, depression or anxiety as it affects the relationship, rekindling emotional and physical intimacy, parenting, helping couples understand and lovingly manage their child’s/adult child’s mental illness/substance use difficulties, and infertility issues. With individuals, I help them with depression and/or anxiety that is exacerbated by relationships or that developed out of being in a difficult relationship. I help individuals with their intimate relationships, family relationships, work relationships, friendships, and faith based/church relationships. I help individuals regain control of overwhelming negative thoughts including trauma induced negative thoughts. I support individuals in their active recovery from substance use or from other strongholds. I help individuals identify and manage their particular anger style, deal with grief/loss, and forgiveness issues. Finally, I work with parents and families to help improve the harmony in the home. My approach to therapy is caring, active, and supportive. My style is gentle and directive; insightful and practical. I see my role as one in which I am able to assist you in repairing and enhancing your relationships. The techniques I use to help you reach your relational goals are developed from Gottman’s cutting edge research on what makes for enduring and satisfying relationships. In addition to the Gottman Method, I work from family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and attachment perspectives. Family systems addresses how to balance our need to be uniquely ourselves while in close intimate relationships and change unwanted family patterns. Cognitive-behavioral perspective helps with improving our moods and changing unwanted habits. Attachment perspective helps with enhancing our ability to bond and feel closer with important loved ones. These methods when applied lead to an improved overall sense of well-being and relational harmony. Special Populations: For those seeking therapy from a Christian perspective, I have the training, education, and experience with integrating Christian based values with biblically sound psychological principles. I invite you to feel free to ask me questions you may have about my experience and style of therapy.
