Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
Therapy is an opportunity. Clients come into treatment usually to address a painful situation. Beside resolving pain, therapy also possesses the possibility to transform, bringing you from one stage of your life to the next, assimilating previous pain with new growth and understanding. I work with clients to change what they don’t like and strengthen what they do. With that framework in mind, I structure therapy with clients in a multi-disciplinary manner to strengthen the emotional, spiritual and interpersonal elements of their lives. I received my Masters Degree in 2001 from Dominican University in San Rafael and obtained licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 2004. The core of my approach is rooted in Family Systems theory, on which most of my training was based. I rely on this foundation, whether treating individuals, couples or families, because it illuminates generations of behaviors culminating in one person. In addition, I employ Cognitive-Behavioral interventions because I believe in their efficacy and usefulness in a fast-past society that restricts our ability to slow down. The majority of tools in my Anger Management 101 Workbook are Cognitive-Behavioral and therefore are practical and effective. My approach to EMDR therapy is also based in the Cognitive-Behavioral model. As I trained in parenting counseling it became clear that effective treatments would encompass Attachment Theory. This simple theory informs much of the relational struggle people experience concerning feeling unimportant, distrustful or abandoned. Finally, my belief in treating the whole person includes examining the general lifestyle of each client. It is easy to take for granted the impact of sleep, nutrition, exercise and substances, yet they have enormous influence on happiness, coping and daily functioning. I believe in providing professional consultation with other providers for clients so they receive a continuity of care paramount to success and happiness. I return calls and emails whenever possible to ensure this level of care. I strive to provide a safe relationship for all this to come together and make it my goal that you leave each session feeling better than when you arrived. Entering therapy is a commitment of time, effort and resources. I hope we can work together so you can experience more happiness, confidence, acceptance and health.

About My Practice

Office Hours
Monday 11am-7pm Tuesday 9am-6pm Wednesday Thursday 11am-6pm Friday 11am-5pm
I offer expertise in anger management, trauma/EMDR, Attention Deficit Disorder for adults, and specialized NPE counseling for shocking DNA revelations. I have extensive experience with parenting skills for positive parenting and for children with strong-willed personalities. I am pioneering a new approach in working with adults who discovered shocking DNA results from at-home DNA tests or adoptees learning of their adoption and the search for biological family. I blend Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Family Systems theories with Attachment philosophy along with an emphasis in overall lifestyle health, incorporating hygiene in sleep, diet, and exercise.

Donna J. Shanahan, MA

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Pasadena, CA 91101

I am a Marriage and Family therapist in private practice. I work with individuals, couples, and families in short and long-term psychotherapy. We work together to explore memories of the relational dynamics of the individual’s family, the feelings those dynamics created for the individual as a child, and how the individual now relates to those feelings and memories.
