Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
I provide opportunities for individuals and couples to enhance their awareness of themselves and the quality of their relationships with others. My specialties as a therapist include counseling for loss, grief, and long-term illness as well as transitions such as divorce and retirement.

I work to bring emotional conflicts rooted in the past into the 'here and now', helping clients to confront, acknowledge, and resolve their issues.

My philosophy is to make each session as focused and effective as possible, while maintaining a warm, supportive, and safe environment. I provide telehealth services to those too ill or disabled or otherwise unable to have office visits. I use skype, email, and telephone for my telehealth services. I offer a group for women who love too much, based on Robin Norwood's book of that same name. Many women are attracted to men who are physically or emotionally unavailable. They view their own self-worth through the "love" they eek out of these relationships. My group is in my Redwood City office and runs on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00. My fee for is $125 per session. I do offer a sliding scale and have a different rate for my group. Contact me at 650-248-3122 or lgortner@gmail.com for more information or to schedule an appointment.

At the core of many personal issues lie old messages of your sense of worth. Those messages conveyed to you while growing-up that minimized your self-esteem. The journey inward toward your past can often be frightening and disheartening. By slowly revisiting the wounded part of yourself, old repetitive behaviors can cease to exist. A new sense of kindness toward yourself will begin to emerge. Allow me to travel with you to discover what is buried deep inside of your soul, exploring what keeps you from becoming all that you want to be.
