Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
All of our lives are full of struggles, challenges and injustices. Sometime we are just unable to cope alone. I feel its important, and very courageous, to seek the help of a professional during those difficult transitions. I tell my clients that the Chinese character of the word "crisis" consists of two parts; Danger and opportunity. While its true that crisis is one of the most difficult times of our lives, it also opens a space in our hearts for deep growth and change. It is a time imbued with deep possibilities. It is also a time one feels they are walking the "razor's edge." I know, I have been there. I believe in the possibility of change and growth because I have done it, and over the last 20 years I have helped many others to do so as well. Metaphorically, I see myself as a midwife, helping clients to birth themselves into greater authenticity and a fuller happier, life. I bring rich life experience and deep compassion to those I work with. By viewing the word therapy as a "verb" not a noun, I take an active approach with clients, often giving homework assignments that encourage insight and self-empowerment, supporting what I believe to be an innate desire we all have to self-actualize. I do this through an integrative multi-level approach that is tailored to each individual's unique needs. For example, if they are experiencing symtpoms of panic, anxiety or depression, I start with a cognitive-behavioral approach, and interventions that help them regain a sense of personal safety and empowerment. At a deeper level, I help sort through difficult unresolved issues that may still be affecting them from the past. The next layer I work with is exploring their relationships, helping them to develop richer more satisfactory connections. At a deeper level still are the spiritual and existential issues we all share, for I feel its important to find meaning and purpose in one's life, and develop the courage to pursue one's dreams. The length of treatment depends on their goals and needs. Growth is always possible. It is never too late. If there is desire, there is possiblity. I support new possiblities, encourage your strengths, and assist you in making new choices to help you accept and cope with the situations you cannot control or change. My commitment to you is to support, encourage, and facilitate an atmosphere where you feel safe on your journey of new growth and personal discovery.
