Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
In the wake of the 2017 NorCal Firestorms, gallant people from all walks of life who rose to the occasion are becoming aware of burnout, moral injury and compassion fatigue. Everyone has a story, but the best, brightest and bravest among us are often hesitant to tell theirs. Unwelcome developments can throw any of us off course - especially if mistakes, however unavoidable, were made. When struggling with life's extreme challenges overwhelms your coping mechanisms, there's a negative domino effect both inside and outside of you. Inside, you lose sight of your purpose, your perspective, your intrinsic value. Outside, the world loses the full benefit of an important asset: the only You it has. Before those dominoes start to fall, it's smart to get professional support. Support tailored to the unique individual you are, to your unique circumstances. Respectful yet gently challenging. Confidential and private, of course. Support which helps you come to terms with your experience frees you up, informs your next steps. Because though it's not possible to avoid all of life's vicissitudes, it is possible to reduce their impact. And in the process, learn useful things about yourself, where you've been, and where you want to go. Research confirms my own experience about what makes therapy effective and satisfying for both client and therapist: it's the "fit" between the two. For that reason, I make every effort to curate my clientele, and I encourage you to shop around. When you first call, we'll have an extended conversation free of charge. If at the conclusion of that conversation we both think we have a potential fit, we'll meet for a live initial session. After that meeting, if either of us feels the fit is not optimal, that live initial session is also free, and I provide you with referrals. If on the other hand we both think we're a good fit, we move forward, with the following week's session conducted on the telephone. Our work continues in this alternating format - live session one week, telephone session the next week - until it is concluded. Busy people appreciate not having to travel to an office very week. My mission is to sustain the Sustainers. I've been helping strong people stay that way since 1989. From 2007 to 2017, it was a wide variety of strong people (nationalities, races, generations) in a wide variety of places (outside the bubbles of both NorCal and the USA) who were facing a wide variety of challenges (war, for instance). The variety of that decade has allowed me to supplement lessons long learned with new learning, and kept me fresh and enthusiastic about the good work we'll do together. If you'd like to talk about it all, please call. I'm ready when you are.
