Personal Statement

Personal Statement:
My name is Sarah Ashbrook and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I possess multidisciplinary qualifications and utilize a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities to assist clients. My style is empathic, authentic, insightful, empowering, and interactive. I especially enjoy working individually with adolescents and adults. I believe the object of therapy is to help ease suffering while facilitating growth and change to improve personal functioning. I am impassioned and enthusiastic about the work that I do. I have over a decade of experience working with clients from adolescence onward in individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy. I use a client-centered therapy approach to treat a wide range of conditions including: · Anger and/or anxiety · Bipolar disorder and other mental health diagnoses · Co-occurring, dual diagnosis concerns · Depression and suicidal feelings · Drug addictions, including alcohol · Family of origin issues · Personal growth and self-awareness · Relationships with self and others · Sadness and depression · Self-esteem and self-image problems · Substance abuse/dependence and recovery issues · and much more What I believe is special or distinct about me as a therapist: I have overcome much and have grown and matured into the person I am today. I am extroverted and can be supportive of people’s potential for growth and change. I believe I have the ability to offer hope to people who are without hope. I have the gift of being able to look at things from different angles and find something positive in nearly any situation and/or experience. Due to my addiction background, I have a solid spiritual foundation and believe that I have been ‘called’ to do this work, to help others. What are MFTs? Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals; couples whether or not married; families of all types; and groups to cure or relieve mental, emotional, and relational concerns of all kinds. MFTs work in private practice and a variety of other settings throughout California and the rest of the country providing mental health services. MFTs have minimally acquired two-year masters degrees, 3,000 hours of supervised experience, and have passed two rigorous exams.
